Take
a step back in time on one of the self-guided heritage
walks throughout the city of Goulburn, NSW. Many of the
fine old buildings, built by our forefathers, have
survived modernisation and can be discovered on one of
the easy heritage walking tours.
Learn about Goulburn's origins as Australia's first
inland city or discover the Goulburn of 1890s authoress
Miles Franklin, who famously wrote My Brilliant Career.
The Miles Franklin's self-guided tour commemorates Miles'
years as a resident in the Goulburn district. It features
many of the sites mentioned in her books and journals and
identifies places that she would have recognised in her
numerous trips to the city.
The first steam railway in Australia was not a project of
the NSW Government; nor was it a Sydney venture. The
first steam railway was conceived in Goulburn and built
by a private enterprise company controlled by Goulburn
interests.
A
special self-guided tour identifying Goulburn's
significant rail heritage sites has been created to
commemorate the 150th anniversary of rail in NSW. This
tour begins at the old Goulburn Brewery that was founded
by the founding Director of the Sydney Railway Co.
Another self-guided tour that commences at the Brewery is
the Governor Macquarie Historic Walking Trail along the
Mulwaree Chain of Ponds. There is also a walking trail
along the Wollondilly River that highlights some of the
city's historic sites.
