Heritage
abounds in the Goulburn District! Visit the magnificent
St Saviour's Cathedral or take a tour through the
historic Hume family home 'Garroorigang' or the National
Trust's Twynam family estate 'Riversdale'.
Standing sentinel over the city is the Goulburn War
Memorial and Museum on Rocky Hill, providing unparalleled
views of the city and district with valuable collection
of artefacts including a door from Changi prison. The
Remembrance Library at Mulwaree High School houses a
militaria collection of over 5,000 acquisitions from the
Vietnam War back to the NZ Maori War.
Take a step back in time when you visit the historic
Goulburn Brewery. Designed by colonial architect Francis
Greenway, it is the oldest working industrial complex in
Australia. Sample the traditionally brewed ales with
self-guided and guided tours available. Also at the
Brewery complex is Goulburn's 1880s classroom where
school groups are encouraged to dress up in period
costume (supplied) and spend a session learning latin,
writing with pen and ink and playing traditional
games.
Nearby you'll find Goulburn's Rail Heritage Centre where
you can have a guided tour of the railway workshop and
1918 roundhouse where veteran locomotives and
rollingstock are under restoration. For the engine and
steam enthusiast, be sure to visit when the Goulburn
Historic Waterworks is steaming (approx. monthly and by
prior arrangement). Goulburn was one of the first
regional centres to supply piped drinking water to its
residents and the beam engine installed in 1883 remains
fully operational.
You can trace your family history in Goulburn at the St
Clair Folk Museum and Archives or at the Regional History
Reading Room with a specialist librarian in the Goulburn
Branch Library. There are many local history books and
pamphlets available for purchase from the Goulburn
Visitor Information Centre or undertake a 'headstone
hunt' in the city's historic cemeteries where you will
find the famous explorer William Hovell and the Durack
pioneering family.
